About This Place

Tommy Pastrami New York Delicatessen stands out as an authentic taste of New York right in the heart of Santa Ana, California. This deli and sandwich shop perfectly captures the essence of classic New York deli culture—offering hearty, overstuffed sandwiches, flavorful homemade soups, and a welcoming atmosphere that invites you to linger over every bite.

From the moment you step inside, you can feel the passion and tradition that goes into every dish. The crown jewel here is undoubtedly the Hot Pastrami Sandwich, which boasts thick, tender slices of pastrami piled high on fresh rye bread, complemented by the shop’s signature two extra mustards that deliver that sharp, tangy kick New York deli fans crave. If you want to explore further culinary delights, try the Philly Cheese Steak or the Philly Steak Sandwich, bursting with mouthwatering grilled onions and mushrooms that add layers of rich, savory flavor.

What truly sets Tommy Pastrami apart is its dedication to authentic homemade soups. Their Matzo Ball Chicken Soup, a comforting classic priced at $12, is a heartwarming delight, perfectly balanced and rich in tradition. The Award Winning Chili at $8.50 delivers bold, robust flavors that redefine what chili fries can be—creamy cheese smothered fries topped with this exquisite chili make for an addictive side that customers rave about. For those who visit on Fridays, the New England Clam Chowder is a seasonal specialty not to be missed, offering a creamy, briny taste of the East Coast.

Dining here feels like a genuine New York deli experience, albeit with a sunny California twist—casual, comfortable, and buzzing with local life. Customers often highlight the friendly service that makes each visit feel personable and welcoming, whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or indulging in a relaxed meal with friends. Nick’s glowing praise for the pastrami and chili fries captures the sentiment perfectly: “I don't even know where to begin... The pastrami is AMAZING!” Meanwhile, Zachary Nelson’s comments about the deli mustard and flavorful chili underline the authentic, satisfying food that keeps regulars coming back.

The menu is diverse and generous, ranging from the hefty Original Pastrami Sandwich ($19.95) to the luxurious Skyscraper (a 12oz behemoth at $26.95), and specialty items like the NY Reuben and the Tommy Special. Each dish promises a robust, meaty, and perfectly seasoned experience. Even the Grilled Cheese Tomato Soup combo offers a comforting, nostalgic bite that brings the warmth of a New York deli right to your table.

While most reviews laud the food and service, a few guests, like Steve El Camino, mention that certain items, such as the pastrami texture and portion sizes, didn’t meet their high expectations. Yet, these seem to be rare moments in an otherwise overwhelmingly positive dining experience that’s rich with flavor, tradition, and heart.

Whether you’re craving an overstuffed sandwich dripping with savory pastrami, a soul-soothing bowl of matzo ball soup, or a side of indulgent chili cheese fries, Tommy Pastrami New York Delicatessen offers a genuine slice of New York deli culture in Southern California—trusted by locals and recommended by visitors alike. It’s a place where each bite tells a story, from freshly baked rye to perfectly spiced soups, making every meal here more than just food—it’s an authentic, flavorful journey.

I don't even know where to begin.... I've gone here numerous times and have never had a bad experience. The pastrami is AMAZING! Normally I don't like chili fries (because most places can't make good chili...) but I recommend the chili fries to anyone and everyone I tell about this place. They are fantastic. Had my in-laws go here for a meal and they were going to split a sandwich and fries, they asked them for a plate so they can split it and the people working did it for them, split the sandwich and wrapped them both individually... talk about customer service!

Pastrami was hard and overcooked. Not very much meat on the sandwich. Potato Kanishes was ok. $30 for one meal and I was not impressed. It was good but not great enough for me to pay that much to go back.

My brother and I hear went for lunch before we went to the observatory down the street to see a show. We had a Reuben sandwich with pastrami and potato salad. The sandwich we got was from one and it said the both of us the potato salad was a pound. And we had two drinks. The staff was very friendly the food was excellent. I highly recommend checking these sandwich shop out.

I’ve never been to a NY deli so don’t think it has the same vib (sunny Cali in a strip mall), but MY GAWD is the food fantastic! Ordered the Turkey club with mayo and mustard and Chili. Sandwich was great and their deli mustard is NY deli worthy! Chili was a very good variant without cumin but still lots of flavor and texture. Highly recommend and worth the short walk from office! Service was very friendly and place is clean and busy.

Took a chance and didn't regret it. Ordered a half meatball sub and It was like Tommy's Nona was in the back making gravy all day waiting for me. Loved the bread too. A little Taste of the East Coast Italian food I had growing up.

I from New York City, so I had to try this place that was claiming to have food made from home. It didn't have pushy crowds of people or no train station in the area, but the vibe was all good. I had the big 3/4 pastrami sandwich. Taste was great. I will definitely be returning!!!

First time here! Came in this afternoon around 11:30am. No wait. Fast service! I was checking out the menu and was greeted promptly. I didn't get the cashiers name, but she was very friendly, kind and informative. I was torn between the brisket and pastrami. I chose the half pastrami on a French roll with melted swiss cheese. The sandwich was well priced for the amount of food I received. I ordered the half, but it for sure looked like a full. So maybe the full is even larger? Overall great sandwich! I'll definitely be back! I left wanting more! Very tasteful and savory!
